Cecilia Garcia & Serkan Gokcesu

They need no introduction, but if you have not yet had the opportunity, here if a little bit about Cecilia & Serkan. Cecilia & Serkan are tango dancers and teachers. They are known worldwide and are considered references for the expressive potential of modern tango. They are praised for their quality of movement, and the unique and genuine proposal embedded in their dance: that tango is an ongoing dialogue between the two dancers, and between the dancers and the music.

Because it comes from a place of pure improvisation, and therefore high-stakes risk, each of their performances is electrifying in a unique and unrepeatable way.

Cecilia & Serkan have been dancing together since 2010. Together they have performed in numerous tango festivals, and many tango schools, around the world. Their dance is in constant development, and they are sought-after, not only to share the fruits of their constant research and development, but also to share their process of experimentation, improvisation and development. They are famous for helping their students craft their own unique dance, rather than just copying the movement style of their teachers.

Cecilia & Serkan have shared the stage with the most renowned tango orchestras, both traditional and experimental. They were honored to participate in the world-famous Oslo Music Festival. During the pandemic shutdown, they were featured dancers in the “Tango en la Terraza” online concert series (www.tangoenlaterraza.com), which was co-produced by the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School.

They are interested in the ongoing evolution of tango, as an artistic expression and as a psycho-physical-emotional therapy. They believe that tango has the potential to be far more than a fun diversion, that it can help people to live better lives.

Not convinced?! Check out the interview and performances below.

En Vivo: Duo of Duos

We're back! Guardia Vieja is so excited to be back with our second En Vivo Concert Series weekend experience. In honor of this being our second En Vivo, we are playing with a couple of dualities, featuring Dúo Villarreal Crom and the bandoneon/piano duo Heyni Solera & Sumi Lee.

April 14-16, 2023 | Gordon Square Arts District, Cleveland, OH | Please review our COVID Policies. Tickets available here.

Run of Show

  • Villarreal Crom Peña (April 14th, 8-11pm): A peña is the equivalent of a milonga for Argentine Folkloric music and dance. The Villarreal Crom Peña takes the audience on a tour through the diverse and exquisite folkloric music of Argentina in the format of a seated concert. We aim to bring in the dance with an intro to Chacarera at 8pm and a concert start time of 9pm. Attendees of the class will be able to try out what they learned to the live Chacarera during the concert.

  • A GPS for Tango Listening: What Makes Tango Tango (April 15, 2023, 12-3pm): To get where you’re going in Argentine Tango, it helps to know where you’re coming from. Dialogue with Heyni Solera as she brings her sense of adventure and scholarship to explore what makes Argentine tango the genre that it is, how it has developed to present day and where it can take us in the future.

  • What the H*** Is Musicality Anyways? (April 15, 2023, 7-8pm): A musicality workshop for dancers of all levels. Includes live music examples by the Dúo Villarreal Crom, and movement exercises.

  • Live Music Milonga featuring Dúo Villarreal Crom (April 15, 2023, 8pm-midnight): Our very own DJ Craig Herrington will keep us dancing before, after, and in-between live music tandas (sets) by Dúo Villarreal Crom.

  • Everything You Need to Know About the Bandoneon (April 16, 2023, 1:30-2:45pm): Originally made in Germany, the bandoneon found its way down to Argentina, where it was incorporated into the tango orchestra. This workshop explains how this instrument would become the iconic instrument of tango through its specific sonority, instrumentation, and articulations. This workshop also explains how it earned its reputation as the “devil’s instrument,” but also how it is instrumental for inspiring dancers to move along the dance floor. Come and discover all the unique aspects of this beautiful instrument.

  • En Vivo Concert: Heyni & Sumi (April 16, 2023, 3-4pm): This seated concert will feature solos and duos of contemporary Tango on the Bandoneon and Piano, featuring Heyni Solera and Sumi Lee.

  • Putting Things Together (April 16, 2023, 8-9pm): For a very special closing event, master puppeteer, Patricio Crom, will be presenting a very special Puppet Show! We won't give away too much here, but we are so excited to share this unique offering for the very first time with the Cleveland Community!

Note: The Villarreal Crom Peña and Live Music Milonga featuring Dúo Villarreal Crom will also include libations curated by Chemical X Bartending.

En Vivo: Heyni Solera & Teagan Faran

We are so excited to be joining the Cleveland community and bringing new Tango experiences to our new hometown! For our very first event, we are kicking things off with a unique opportunity to experience Contemporary Agentine Tango through a concert event, featuring a series of solos and duos with Heyni Solera on bandoneon and Teagan Faran on violin.

September 24, 2022 | Negative Space (1541 East 38th Street, 2nd Floor Warehouse) Please review our COVID Policies. Tickets available here.

Heyni Solera and Teagan Faran first played together asynchronously during early Spring 2020. Since then, their collaborations have expanded to performances in cities across the East Coast. Their collective mission is to present Argentine tango through virtuosic artistic performance and informative educational events. Heyni and Teagan were drawn together by a mutual love of tango music, as well as through solidarity for creating equitable gender space in performance. They studied and performed with prestigious tango orchestras in Buenos Aires and have brought their focus on contemporary work back to North American audiences.

To further enhance the concert experience, we are also offering some bonus content. Please find below details around the complete program offerings:

  • Today's Women in Tango: Carving out Spaces (September 23, 6-8pm): For the past six years, Argentina has seen the feminist movement increase in drive and power. In 2015, the movement "Ni Una Menos" mobilized women to form collectives and to fight for their rights. Several important pieces of legislation have passed as a result of this movement, such as the "Ley De Ocupo" and the legalization of abortion. Tango music has also been influenced by this movement as more female tango musicians begin to form all-women ensembles, take on positions of leadership, engage with social change through protest and academic research, etc. Using an ethnomusicological approach, this lecture focuses on 14 different female, tango musicians to shed some insight on how today's women in tango position themselves during this time period, and how they are carving out for themselves a space in a historically male-dominated genre.

  • A GPS for Tango Listening: What Makes a Tango a Tango (September 24, 12-3pm - NOTE: This location is different and will be at Limelight at Electric Gardens): To get where you’re going in Argentine Tango, it helps to know where you’re coming from. Dialogue with Heyni Solera as she brings her sense of adventure and scholarship to explore what makes Argentine tango the genre that it is, how it has developed to present day and where it can take us in the future. Limited Availability

  • En Vivo: Heyni Solera & Teagan Faran: (September 24, 6pm) Be transported to the Buenos Aires of today, with a Contemporary Tango Concert. See above for artist details.

  • Sunday Funday Milonga (September 25, 12-4pm, Laurie Myers Yoga Studio): At Guardia Vieja we want to celebrate Tango in all its forms, so we have added on a little something for the dancers out there! There will be an afternoon milonga on Sunday to round out the weekend. The milonga will only be available to those who are part of the En Vivo experience, so please be sure to grab your tickets in advance!

  • Tango Vinyls & Wine (September 25, 5pm, Secret Location): An opportunity to meet the artists over a wine tasting and listening to Tango on Vinyl. Limited availability.

We hope there is something here for each of you, and look forward to seeing you over the weekend!

Cruzadito | Tango x Celebration

We have been keeping an eye on how things are going with the pandemic to find the right time to start gathering in person, and we are excited to say that we will be coming back with a soft ‘friends and family’ relaunch event in April 2022. We are hosting our second Cruzadito (check out the link for video recap, if you haven’t been before) here in Austin, from April 14-17th.

We've missed so much over the last couple of years that this time we want to offer a taste of various aspects of Tango with the following events:

  • Live Tango Roundtable hosted by Kristina McFadden, featuring Travis Widrick, Alberto Ramos Cordero, and James Oh at Spider House Ballroom on Friday afternoon, April 15th;

  • Pooja's Practica guided by Adam & Ciko at Abel's on the Lake on Saturday afternoon, April 16th;

  • Two Milongas, both featuring concoctions by our favorite Drink Slingers at Body Collective in the evenings on Friday, April 15th and Saturday, April 16th; and

  • A few optional add ons on April 17th for those who might still be in town, including an in-person Tango Vinyls & Wine!

Many more surprises that are yet to be announced, so stay tuned!

Arco y Aire - En vivo - Event Banner.png

For the past several years, Heyni Solera and Maxfield Wollam-Fisher have been actively working together in bringing live tango music to the Washington D.C. area through their performances with Da Capo Tango.

Their collaboration led to the formation of the unique instrumentation of a cello/bandoneon duo, known as Arco & Aire, that focuses on playing tangos not commonly played on the dance floor and tangos written by composers who are alive today. Their mission is to foster a sense of community and collaboration between tango musicians, organizers, and dancers.

We are so excited to be hosting a Tango Appreciation Seminar presented by Heyni, on October 8, 2021 (6:30-9:30 pm) and a Live Concert event with both Heyni and Max on October 9, 2021 (6-9pm, including a 1 hour set, swag bag, and meet and greet opportunities). Please use the pre-registration link above to sign up today!
